Choosing the Right Book for My Child

Question: How do I know what kind of reading book is good for my child?

Experts in the area recommend you follow the following guideline: The 5 fingers Rule.

First let your child look for books that he or she might enjoy reading. Choose one book at a time. Turn to a page in the middle of the book. Ask your child to read, hold up a finger or write down a little mark on a piece of paper for every word he/she can’t read. 

Follow the following rule:

0        0-1      words-Book is too easy

2-Good choice for the child

3-The child might need some help, but still a good choice for him or he.r

4-The book could be challenging (too difficult to read and understand). You may need to help.

5 or more-Probably too hard for the child, the child might get frustrated with the book.

Pregunta: ¿Cómo puedo saber cual libro es el adecuado para mi hijo?

Los expertos recomiendan seguir la siguiente regla, la regla de los 5 dedos.

Primeramente, deje que su niño busque unos cuantos libros que le interese leer. Escoja cualquiera de los libros y vaya a una de las páginas del medio del libro. Pídale al niño que lea la pagine.

Sostenga un dedo en alto por cada palabra que el niño no pueda leer o escriba una marca en un pedazo de papel por cada palabra. 

Siga las siguientes reglas:

0-1      0-1 El libro probablemente será muy fácil de leer para el niño/a.

2–El libro es probablemente una buena elección para el nivel de lectura del niño/a.

3-el libro puede ser un poco difícil y puede que necesite un poco de ayuda pero podría ser una buena elección también.

4- El libro puede ser muy difícil y el niño/a necesitara ayuda de su parte.

5 o más- La lectura del libro puede ser frustrante para el niño/a, probablemente no es una buena elección.

Apparently, researchers have found that learning two languages:

*increases our mental flexibility and improve metalinguistic awareness (“the ability to recognize language as a system that can be manipulated and explored”)

*improve our memory

Forming Letters is Key to Learning

A recent study conducted by the University of Indiana demonstrates how writing by hand engages the brain in learning. The study demonstrated how children that wrote by hand had a longer and stronger lasting recognition of the characters proper orientation. 

The study suggests that the specific movements memorized aided the visual identification of the graphic shapes.

Educational Implication: Writing by hand the information could help children memorize and retain the information better. Teach any concept or skill and allow the children to use any type of activity were he or she can practice writing the information/skill or concept.

Beneficios del  enseñar y practicar la escritura en molde o cursivo

 Un estudio reciente realizado en la universidad de Indiana ilustra como el escribir en manuscrito puede activar y envolver el cerebro en el aprendizaje de lo que se escribe. En el estudio se utilizo la resonancia magnética (MRI) para medir la actividad neurológica. El estudio indica que los niños que escribieron manualmente o practicaron el escribir las letras mientras se realizaba el estudio demostraron retener mejor la formación de las letras y su reconocimiento. Este hecho parece sugerir que los movimientos específicos  asociados con la escritura o la formación de las letras ayuda a la identificación visual de las letras.

Implicaciones Educativas: Provea la oportunidad de escribir manualmente mediante el uso de cualquier medio (tiza/pizarra, crayola/papel, pintura/papel, etc.) la información, concepto o destreza que se quiere enseñar.

GOOD MATH APPLICATIONS

Looking for good math activities for your child? Take a look at Math Splash, a series of Apps for kids from kindergarten through 5^th grade. You can download them on your ipad or iphone. The applications were created by Study Map and are aligned with the new adopted Common Core Standards. These standards are an US education initiative that seeks to bring state curricula into alignment with each other by following the principles of standard-based educational reform. The only states that are not following these standards are: Nebraska, Alaska, Texas and Virginia.

In addition to the app. to be aligned to the Math Standards it also:

*provides weekly reports to track trouble spots

* parents or children can control the level of difficulty of the activities: easy, medium, hard

*automatically grades the responses and offers parents a detailed email report

Buenas Aplicaciones para desarrollar conceptos matemáticos

¿Buscando nuevas actividades o recursos para que sus hijos practiquen los conceptos matemáticos  de acuerdo a su edad y nivel escolar? “ Splash Math”, una serie de aplicaciones para los niños de jardín de infantes hasta quinto grado que puede usarse con ipad o iphone. Las aplicaciones fueron creadas por Study Map. Las destrezas de los juegos están alineadas con los estándares comunes adoptados por la mayoría de los estados (Common Core Standards). Los estándares fueron diseñados para proveer consistencia entre lo que todos los estados ensenan en cada nivel o grado escolar.
